ACADEMIC SELF EFFICACY

Academic self efficacy is a function of students’ beliefs about their capacity to learn and achieve academic success. This includes their ability to access support.

Self Efficacy is informed by the broader concept of self image - what I believe about myself as a person directly informs how I see myself as a student.

This in turn informs motivation, behaviour and engagement. If I believe I am able to achieve success as a learner I’m more motivated to sit down and start studying (task initiation). And when I do study, I’m more engaged with the process which means information is retained and recalled more efficiently.

Success breeds success.

Equally, as a student with a high level of self efficacy, I understand that underperformance is usually a function of misdirected effort rather than innate ability: I’m able to separate my sense of ‘self’ from a set of exam results and am less likely to judge myself harshly in relation to my peers…‘I may have performed poorly in a set of exams but I know this just means I need to rethink my preparation and use more effective study strategies’. The result is increased academic ‘endurance’ and perseverance.

I work with students to redefine their beliefs about who they are as learners and develop the factors that enable high levels of self efficacy.
