ACADEMIC MOTIVATION
Academic motivation refers to students’ internal state that enables sustained action towards their academic goals. As with all forms of motivation, this is a twofold construct consisting of intrinsic motivation (I work hard because I am interested in the subject) and extrinsic motivation (I work hard because I want to get a good ATAR).
Researchers have broken this down to a more specific set of factors that boost or undermine academic motivation. These factors will vary between students, subjects, and are impacted by life events, developmental stages and more.
When students (and parents) are aware of how and why motivation may fluctuate, they are empowered by the understanding that, rather than just ‘happening’ to them, many of the elements that inform motivation are within their control.
I work with students, parents and schools to develop the tools to define, recalibrate and optimise academic motivation across all subjects.
