cOGNITIVE CONTROL
Cognitive Control is the ability to direct the ‘spotlight’ of attention in an intentional manner to achieve our goals. When we have high levels of cognitive control we are able to make a conscious choice about what, when and how to think.
The starting point for the development of Cognitive Control is an understanding of:
what our cognitive toolkit comprises
how to maximise the performance of each discrete element of cognition - executive functioning skills in particular
how to build congruence and fluency between each cognitive skill
how to optimise the various lifestyle and environmental factors that enable optimal cognitive performance
how to direct the ‘spotlight’ of attention
how to mentally rest and recharge.
I teach students how to harness the power of cognitive control to study and learn effectively.

CLARITY of COMMUNICATION
How can I tell if someone has a high level of Cognitive Control. And why is it important?
The most obvious traits are confidence and clarity of communication: A person with high cognitive control will always be able to articulate their goals, and the thinking that supports them, in a clear, concise manner. Less is usually more.
This includes how they communicate with themselves. Most of us would be horrified if we were to verbalise what we say to ourselves mentally each day. A person with a high level of cognitive control is able to ‘catch’ and reframe this thinking - the result is an unshakeable confidence. A confidence that knows you are now in control of every aspect of your life.
These are highly teachable skills.
