What is Cognitive Coaching?
Cognitive performance is underpinned by brain function. Specifically, how well different brain networks interact.
Cognitive coaching means teaching students how to optimise the various elements of brain function and build fluency between brain networks. This ‘contextual understanding’ is then applied to the learning process, individual subjects and exam performance.
Executive Functioning
The most relevant cognitive skills for school aged students (and learners of any age) include selective and sustained attention (concentration), working memory, encoding and retrieval of information.
These processes are enhanced by an ability to inhibit distractions.
I teach these skills through explicit modelling and practice with feedback until each is understood and applied at mastery level.

‘We all have hidden potential, we just don’t know how to unlock it. Raw ability is less important than motivation and opportunity - in particular having access to the tools you need to improve.’
Dr Adam Grant
I work with students to awaken cognitive and academic potential. This begins with helping them to understand their mindset - how they perceive themselves as students - and how this perception informs their engagement with learning and study.
We also know that teaching students about their own thinking (metacognition) is key to building self efficacy and motivation. The teaching and acquisition of these skills is enhanced by the increased neuroplasticity and pruning that occur as part of adolescent brain development.
These understandings inform every aspect of what I do. Helping students to optimise all elements of thinking (cognition) and study to redefine themselves as successful, well rounded learners and architects of their own lives.
